The Costa del Sol With Teenagers

Ages 12–18·Prices included·Phone-worthy

There's an awkward gap on a family holiday. At eight, the kids' club and the water park are the whole point. At nineteen, the nightlife is. Between twelve and eighteen, a teenager on the Costa del Sol is often bored by the pool by day three and too young for everything else.

Here's what genuinely works for that age group here — including the honest caveats about age limits, cost and which ones they'll actually put on their phone.

The ones that work

Why flying works so well at that age

We fly a lot of teenagers, and the reaction is consistently stronger than with adults. Partly it's novelty. Partly it's that nobody at school has done it. And partly — being honest about how fifteen-year-olds work — it's the footage.

The practicalities:

One tip from experience: if you have two teenagers and one is keen and one is pretending not to be, book the keen one first. The second almost always changes their mind on the launch site, once they've watched a take-off.

Something they'll actually remember

Tandem paragliding from €100 · paramotor over Ronda from €100 · under-18s fly with written parental consent. Photo and video package €20.

Outdoors, without a flight

The Caminito del Rey

Perfect for this age group: a metre-wide walkway 100 metres above a gorge, with see-through floor sections and a suspension bridge. Physically it's a gentle three-hour walk; psychologically it's a big deal, which is exactly the combination you want. Minimum age 8, around €10. Book weeks ahead — it sells out.

Sea kayaking at Maro–Cerro Gordo

East of Nerja: sea caves, a waterfall that drops straight into the Mediterranean, and coves with no road access. Two to three hours, €35–€50, April to October. Easy enough for a beginner and interesting enough for a teenager.

Via ferrata

Steel rungs and a safety cable up a rock face — the look of climbing without needing to know how to climb. Routes near El Chorro, Comares and Ronda, with graded difficulty. Guided, €40–€70. Minimum ages vary by operator, usually 10–14.

Canyoning

Abseiling, jumping into pools, sliding down water-polished rock. Guided half days in the Sierra de las Nieves from €50. Usually 12+, must be able to swim.

Paddleboarding the Guadalhorce lakes

Flat turquoise water below the Caminito del Rey. Calmer than the sea, cheap, and easy to pick up in fifteen minutes.

Two honest warnings

Don't surprise them with a flight. It works brilliantly for an adult and badly for a teenager. Fourteen-year-olds want to feel in control of a decision like this. Show them a video, let them decide, then book it — the anticipation is half the experience and the buy-in is the other half.

And: book the weather-dependent things early in the week. Flying, kayaking and canyoning all move if conditions turn. A family with three days left has options; a family with one doesn't.

Frequently asked questions

What is there to do on the Costa del Sol for teenagers?

The strongest options are tandem paragliding or paramotor flights (from €100, under-18s with parental consent), the Caminito del Rey walkway (minimum age 8, around €10), sea kayaking at Maro near Nerja, guided via ferrata routes, and canyoning in the Sierra de las Nieves. On the coast, the Benalmádena cable car, Aqualand and karting all still work.

What is the minimum age for a tandem paragliding flight?

There is no fixed minimum age. Children and teenagers fly with us regularly, and what they need is written consent from a parent or guardian, which forms part of our standard consent document. Weight matters more than age: the tandem wing covers a wide range, and very light or very heavy passengers are usually solved by choosing a different wing. There is no upper age limit either, provided the person is in good health.

Is the Caminito del Rey suitable for teenagers?

It's arguably the ideal age group. The minimum age is 8, the walk is physically easy, and the exposure — a metre-wide walkway 100 metres up, with see-through sections — makes it feel like a genuine adventure. Book weeks in advance, because it sells out.

What can teenagers do on the Costa del Sol when it rains?

Málaga's Automobile and Fashion Museum, escape rooms in Málaga and Marbella, bowling and original-version cinema at Miramar in Fuengirola or Plaza Mayor in Málaga, karting, and the Nerja Caves. A hammam visit also works better with older teenagers than parents expect.

Should I surprise my teenager with a flight?

We'd advise against it. Surprises work well for adults and poorly for teenagers, who want to feel they chose it. Show them a video of a flight, let them decide, then book — the anticipation genuinely improves the experience.
